Teaching Rationale

As a teacher I will provide students with many different teaching styles and methods to help them to grasp the material. With the use of technology such as computers, overheads, movies, and hands on lab work, combined with my lectures and their text book the students will be able to seize all the knowledge that is being taught. I will also provide the students with a safe, stable, comfortable and relaxed classroom atmosphere for an optimum learning environment. Also establishing a good parent – teacher relationship will provide a positive term of communication and understanding between parents, students and teacher. This will be done through e-mail, telephone and/or meetings. This will all help to ensure the building of a strong community and help all to strive towards academic excellence.

While teaching the students I will use an array of teaching styles to help all the students to understand the material at hand. I will use lecture to explain information. The information will be backed by handouts to explain and worksheets to reinforce the material. The students will also have group and lab work to have them learn and help teach each other. The lab will be hands on/minds on activities. There will be numerous inquiry activities to allow the students to think on their own with minimal help. The text book is a great way to teach the students when used in the right manner. I will be using it for vocabulary and basic concepts. With all of this there should be no student left behind.

I will have all my classroom rules and policies posted as well as have the students parents sign a sheet which explains the rules to them as well. On this sheet there will also have my e-mail address as well as my voice mail there at school. There will also be a place for them to give me their e-mail address as well as their phone number for contact. Having a good parent-teacher relationship is very important. For a student to get the most out of their schooling both the parents as well as the teachers need to be on the same page.

I will be driving the students into a more detailed world of biology. In do this I just don't want to be teaching them terms and philosophy, but how to think like a biologist. I hope to do this with inquiry projects that will get their minds thinking on their own. I hope to also teach them life skills and skills that they can use in the future. Some skills like, text book reading and understanding, presentation skill with project as well as respect and manners.

I will grab their attention to my lessons by showing them how biology affects their lives. I will also pull in their interests into the classroom with tv shows and/or movies that are appropriate. A unique feature that i bring to the table is my enthusiasms, excitement for the subject, as well as my personality. With these features combined, I grab the students and pull them into the world of biology.

I would like to end with a quote from the famous football coach John Madden, "The road to Easy Street goes through the sewer." If you work hard everyday it will all pay off in the end. This is a life lesson that I have learned through my years and I hope I can pass this onto my students.
